This city-owned corner at Mansfield and Fountain, formerly an empty lot, is now a sanctuary for the community and gardeners alike. Thanks to grants and funding from Councilmember Tom La Bonge, Council President Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles Conservation Corps, Central Hollywood Neighborhood Council and Hollywood Neighborhood Charities, the garden was opened in early 2003.
Two years later, additional grants from the Department of Public Works and Neighborhood Matching Fund provided a new fence, more shade trees and expanded planting beds. Today, close to two dozen local farmers and 50 school kids use the Mansfield Garden to grow fruits and vegetables. Some of the food grown here – including prized heirloom tomatoes – is served at nearby Ammo Restaurant, a neighborhood eatery noted for its creative, organic comfort food.
